EV Insurance in Malaysia: Battery, Flood and Charger Cover

Howmin is an independent BYD sales advisor. This website is not the official BYD Malaysia corporate website.

An electric car still uses motor insurance, but the usual comprehensive label does not answer every EV question. It covers events stated in the policy, such as an accident, fire or theft. It does not automatically mean every battery problem, flood loss or home charger incident is covered. The policy schedule, endorsements and exclusions decide that.

Is EV insurance different from normal car insurance?

The basic types are the same: Act, Third Party, Third Party Fire and Theft, or Comprehensive cover. What changes is the equipment and the questions worth asking. Some insurers include benefits for the high-voltage battery, charging cable or wall charger, while others sell them as add-ons. The limits and conditions are not standard across the market.

Does comprehensive insurance cover the EV battery?

Do not settle for a one-word answer. Ask what happens in three separate situations.

First, ask whether the traction battery is covered when it is damaged in an insured collision or fire. Second, ask whether water entering the battery is covered when Special Perils applies. Third, ask how the insurer assesses a battery if the car is declared a total loss.

Normal ageing is a different matter. Bank Negara Malaysia lists depreciation, wear and tear, and mechanical or electrical breakdown among the losses normally excluded from a motor policy. A manufacturing defect or an eligible loss of battery capacity may instead fall under the vehicle warranty. Our BYD battery warranty guide explains that distinction.

Does comprehensive insurance include flood damage?

No, not normally. Flood, storm, landslide and similar natural events generally require a Special Perils extension.

This matters for any modern car, not only an EV. For an electric car, also ask whether the Special Perils wording covers water ingress affecting the high-voltage battery and its related parts. Some EV products state this clearly, but it should not be assumed from the word comprehensive alone.

Check the Additional Coverage section of the quotation or policy schedule. A flood allowance is also not the same as full flood cover. An allowance may pay a fixed benefit while Special Perils deals with insured vehicle damage, subject to its own terms and limits.

Is a home wall charger automatically covered?

Not always. Charging equipment can sit between motor insurance and home insurance.

PIAM says a permanently installed charger may be treated as a fixture or fitting under the buildings section of a home policy. A portable charging cable is more likely to need an EV motor benefit or add-on. Review both policies instead of expecting one to cover the car, charger, house and third-party liability automatically.

Current EV products may cover the wall charger, portable cable and liability if another person is injured or neighbouring property is damaged through use of the charger. Check the limit, insured events, installation requirements and whether the benefit can be claimed more than once during the policy year.

PIAM also advises homeowners to notify their home insurer after installing a permanent charger. The installation should comply with electrical requirements and be handled by qualified parties. Our home wall charger guide covers the installation checks separately.

What if the EV runs out of charge?

Some EV packages provide towing to the nearest charging station or back home. Some offer limited on-site charging in selected areas. Do not assume a normal breakdown plan includes an empty traction battery. Check the destination, distance, number of calls and service area.

Why can two EV insurance quotes look very different?

Price is only one part of the comparison. The premium can change with the vehicle’s sum insured, agreed or market value basis, the driver’s risk profile, No Claim Discount, excess and selected extensions.

One quotation may include Special Perils and EV roadside assistance while another leaves them out. Wall charger and cable limits can also vary. Compare the written schedules, check the approved repair network and ask where an EV with high-voltage damage would be inspected. For an older vehicle, betterment may apply from five years old when new franchise parts replace damaged older parts.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote

  • Is battery damage from a covered collision or fire included?
  • Does Special Perils cover flood and battery water ingress?
  • Is the policy based on agreed value or market value?
  • What excess applies, and when can the NCD be affected?
  • Is the home wall charger covered, and what is the limit?
  • Is the portable charging cable covered away from home?
  • Is liability while charging included?
  • What happens if the car runs out of charge?
  • Which workshop will handle an EV accident claim?
  • Are any benefits limited to one claim during the policy year?

Ask for the final quotation and Product Disclosure Sheet in writing. If an EV benefit was explained verbally, make sure it appears in the policy schedule or endorsement before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is EV insurance always more expensive than petrol-car insurance?

Not necessarily. The premium depends on the insured value, driver profile, NCD, insurer and selected cover. Compare quotations for the actual model and variant instead of applying a fixed percentage.

Does comprehensive insurance automatically cover flood?

No. Special Perils normally has to be selected and shown in the policy schedule.

Is battery degradation covered by insurance?

No. Gradual capacity loss, wear and tear, and mechanical or electrical breakdown are different from accidental damage. An eligible battery defect or capacity issue may be considered under the manufacturer’s warranty.

Is the portable charging cable insured with the car?

Only if the policy or EV endorsement says so. Check the insured events, limit, location restrictions and number of claims allowed.

Will running out of charge include free towing?

It depends on the roadside assistance package. Confirm the towing destination, distance limit, service area and number of calls before buying.
