If your Malaysian landed house uses single-phase electricity supply, you can often still install an EV wall charger. The number on the wallbox is not the charging speed you are guaranteed to get. TNB’s guidance looks at the home’s total electrical load including the charger, the wallbox has to suit the phase supply your house actually has, and the car never charges faster than its own onboard AC limit. That is why an assessment by a contractor registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga comes before choosing any equipment, not after.
Can a single-phase house install a wall charger?
Often, yes. TNB’s customer guidance on home EV chargers places a single-phase home at a total maximum electricity load of up to 10 kW, including the EV charger. Load above 10 kW and up to 37 kW normally falls under three-phase supply. The figure covers everything running in the house at the same time, not the charger alone.
TNB also gives a simple visual clue: a single-phase supply has two wires connected to the TNB meter, while a three-phase supply has four. Treat this only as an initial clue and never touch or open the meter. Confirm your actual supply phase through your electricity account, the myTNB app or an ST-registered electrical contractor.
What must be checked in the house?
Two houses on the same street can get different answers. What matters is how much load the house draws at the same time, the condition of the distribution board and wiring, and the cable route from the board to where the car parks.
TNB advises appointing a licensed wireman or electrical contractor registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga to check the home’s total load, including the charger, before installation. Home charging often runs in the evening while air conditioning, water heating and cooking are also drawing power, and it is this combined load the assessment works out.
Because of that combined load, even a wallbox sold as 7 kW or 7.4 kW may need to be configured to a lower output if the assessment finds the house does not have room for the full amount.
What 3.7 kW, 7.4 kW, 11 kW and 22 kW mean
Wallbox brochures keep repeating a few numbers. They describe common configurations, not a guarantee for every product or every installation.

In the common configurations shown above, delivering the full 11 kW or 22 kW output uses three-phase supply. Some wallboxes labelled 11 kW or 22 kW also accept single-phase input, and some do not. Where a model does, an 11 kW unit limited to 16 A on one phase may provide about 3.7 kW, and a 22 kW unit that supports 32 A on one phase may provide about 7.4 kW. Both are product examples from official specifications, such as the go-e Charger Gemini and the ABB Terra AC wallbox, not a rule for every wallbox. The installer must check the exact model’s datasheet and installation instructions.
Matching the house, wallbox and car
On the car side, most BYD models currently listed on this site accept AC charging at up to 7 kW, while the Atto 3 Premium and Sealion 7 take up to 11 kW. Each model page lists the figure for that car.
The charging speed you actually get is set by the lowest limit in the chain: what the assessed house and TNB supply can carry, what the wallbox supports on your phase supply and how it is configured, what the dedicated circuit and installation are designed for, and the car’s own onboard AC charger. A BYD with an 11 kW onboard limit does not charge at 22 kW just because the wallbox label says 22 kW. Once the installation already delivers the car’s full onboard limit, a bigger wallbox nameplate adds no speed.
The exact single-phase charging behaviour of a BYD model rated for up to 11 kW AC should be confirmed for the specific vehicle variant and wallbox combination. Check the official BYD documentation or support information together with the appointed installer before choosing the charger.
When a three-phase upgrade may make sense
A tight assessment result does not have a single fix. Depending on what the contractor finds, the options may include configuring the charger to a lower output, using load-management features where the equipment properly supports them, or applying to TNB for a three-phase upgrade. Load management is not a promise that every house can fit a charger.
Installing the charger itself does not require a TNB application, but upgrading from single-phase to three-phase does, and myTNB has the process. Quotations vary because the cable route, distance, distribution board condition, protection equipment, wallbox choice and any supply upgrade differ from house to house, so ask for a written scope and quotation after the site assessment.
What the installer should inspect
Charger installation is regulated electrical work. It must be handled by a wireman or electrical contractor registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga, following ST’s guidelines on EV charging systems and the selected charger’s own instructions. TNB requires the charger to use a dedicated circuit from the distribution board. Homeowners should not alter the charger circuit themselves, while the TNB meter and service fuse must not be tampered with. Charger-circuit work must be handled by the appointed ST-registered wireman or electrical contractor.
Be cautious of any installer who quotes without a site assessment, proposes changes to the meter or fuse, skips the dedicated circuit, or cannot show ST registration and certification paperwork.
Questions to ask before accepting a quotation
- Are you registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga, and will the work be certified?
- Does the quotation include an assessment of my total household load?
- Does this wallbox model support single-phase supply, and what output will it deliver on my supply?
- Will the charger be on a dedicated circuit from the distribution board?
- Does the house need any upgrade work first, and is it in the written scope?
If you rent the house, add one more step: get the landlord’s written agreement on the installation and on what happens to the equipment when the tenancy ends.
