BYD Battery Warranty, Lifespan and Replacement Cost in Malaysia

Every current BYD passenger EV listed on this site uses the Blade Battery, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack designed for long-term use. The Malaysian high-voltage battery warranty covers 8 years or 160,000 km. BYD Sime Motors states that an eligible battery falling below 70% State of Health within coverage receives complete replacement after assessment at an authorised service centre.

Warranty expiry does not mean the battery suddenly stops working, and BYD Malaysia does not publicly list a retail replacement price. BYD states the Blade Battery can exceed 5,000 charge and discharge cycles, though that is a claim about the battery design, not a guaranteed lifespan for any individual car.

What battery lifespan and SOH mean

A charge cycle is one full equivalent use of the battery’s capacity, and it does not have to happen in a single trip. Using the battery from 100% to 0% and charging it back up counts as roughly one full cycle. This example only explains how cycle counting works; it is not advice to regularly discharge the battery to 0%. Partial use adds up the same way: if a driver uses 20% one day, 30% another and 50% later, those amounts together make roughly one full cycle, even if the car was charged after every trip. Five top-ups from 80% to 100% also add up to roughly one cycle. Plugging in every night does not automatically mean one cycle per night. These are simplified examples showing how battery usage accumulates.

State of Health (SOH) describes the battery’s measured maximum capacity compared to its reference condition when new. A 100% SOH reading represents that reference. A 90% reading broadly means the battery holds around 90% of its original maximum capacity, but that does not guarantee exactly 90% of the original driving range. Traffic, speed, temperature, tyres, air conditioning and driving style also affect how far the car travels on a full charge.

How quickly SOH changes depends on driving habits, charging behaviour, temperature and storage. No fixed number of years or kilometres applies to every vehicle.

BYD Malaysia battery warranty

The high-voltage Blade Battery warranty is 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first. BYD Sime Motors states that if SOH falls below 70% within warranty coverage, an eligible claim results in complete high-voltage battery replacement. The vehicle must be assessed by an authorised BYD service centre, and the claim is subject to the warranty terms.

This warranty applies across the Malaysian BYD passenger-car range, including earlier purchases. Battery health is checked during scheduled servicing, and missing the required schedule may affect warranty eligibility. Using a non-BYD-branded charger does not by itself cancel the warranty, but damage linked to unsuitable charging equipment or incorrect installation may affect a claim.

What to do if you notice a battery problem

If your driving range drops noticeably, charging behaviour changes, or a warning appears on the dashboard, contact an authorised BYD service centre. The service centre will diagnose the vehicle and determine the next step under warranty or as a paid service. Do not attempt high-voltage battery work yourself or through an unauthorised workshop.

Natural disasters and accidents are not warranty claims. They may be handled through motor insurance, depending on policy coverage and the insurer’s assessment.

How long the battery may remain usable

There is no single lifespan that applies to every car. Battery capacity normally declines gradually, and the rate depends on age, mileage, charging habits, temperature and how the car is stored.

The warranty period does not set an expiry date on the battery. If a battery’s reduced range still meets the owner’s daily driving needs, it may remain usable after the warranty period.

What happens after the warranty expires

If the remaining capacity still suits your driving needs, you continue driving as normal. When a battery does need attention, the authorised service centre will diagnose the vehicle and advise on the next step as a paid service. At the time of writing, BYD Malaysia has not publicly announced a module-only, refurbished or remanufactured battery programme. Based on current service information, replacement means a new battery, but owners should confirm the latest available option with an authorised service centre when obtaining a quotation. High-voltage battery work must be handled by qualified personnel.

Replacement cost

BYD Malaysia does not publicly list a retail price for a replacement high-voltage battery. If replacement is needed after warranty, the authorised service centre must inspect the vehicle and provide a quotation for that model. The price depends on the model, battery capacity, diagnosis, labour and parts availability.

Blade Battery safety

The Blade Battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. BYD says LFP generally needs more heat before rapid heat release begins and releases heat more slowly than ternary lithium chemistry used in some other EVs.

In BYD’s controlled nail-penetration test of a Blade Battery cell, the cell produced no smoke or fire and reached a surface temperature of 30 to 60 degrees Celsius.

These are laboratory results, not proof the battery cannot be damaged. Collision, flooding, electrical faults and improper repair can still create risks with any high-voltage battery.

How to care for a BYD Blade Battery

BYD’s battery-care guidance for its current Blade Battery models includes:

  • Fully charge the vehicle at least once a week
  • Fully charge from below 10% SOC once every three to six months. This periodic calibration guidance does not mean owners should regularly drive the battery below 10%
  • If the vehicle will be idle for more than seven days, keep SOC at 40% to 60%
  • If unused for more than three months, fully charge every three months and then discharge to 40% to 60%. Damage resulting from not following these storage instructions may not be covered by warranty
  • Prolonged exposure to heat sources and direct sunlight may shorten battery service life
  • If the battery suffers an impact, contact an authorised BYD dealer

Check the owner’s manual for your exact model in case its instructions or procedures differ.

Questions to ask before buying a used BYD

If you are considering a pre-owned BYD, check:

  • How much battery warranty remains?
  • Has the vehicle been serviced at authorised BYD centres on schedule?
  • Can the service centre run a battery health check and share the SOH reading?
  • Was the vehicle involved in any accident, flood or major repair?
  • Is the vehicle eligible for the BYD Certified pre-owned programme?
