AC vs DC Charging: What It Means for Your BYD in Malaysia

Howmin is an independent BYD sales advisor. This website is not the official BYD Malaysia corporate website.

AC is the electricity from the grid and from a home wall charger. DC is what the battery stores, and what a public fast charger delivers. How quickly your BYD charges, and where it makes sense to plug in, follows from that.

What happens when you charge an EV?

Malaysian household electricity is alternating current, or AC. An EV battery stores direct current, or DC. Something has to convert one into the other, and the question is where.

During AC charging, the conversion happens inside the car. The onboard charger converts incoming AC into DC and sets the maximum AC rate the car can accept. A higher-rated wall charger cannot make the car charge above that onboard limit.

During DC fast charging the conversion happens in the station instead, which sends DC straight to the car. That is why DC can be much faster.

Skipping the onboard charger does not mean skipping the car’s control: the vehicle and its battery management system still decide how much power the battery accepts.

How do you tell a Type 2 charger from a CCS2 one?

BYD models sold in Malaysia use a Type 2 connector for AC charging and a CCS2 connector for DC fast charging.

They are easy to tell apart. Type 2 is the rounded upper section. CCS2, short for Combined Charging System 2, keeps that upper section and adds two larger DC pins underneath, so the plug is visibly bigger.

The plug on the cable tells you which you are getting. Some AC points have a cable attached, others expect you to bring your own. The connector and the vehicle must also be compatible.

Why is home charging in Malaysia normally AC?

Household supply here is AC, so a wall charger at a landed house works with the electricity already coming in. Overnight parking often provides enough time to recover the energy used in normal daily driving, although the result depends on the car, starting battery level and charging rate.

What a house can support is a separate question, and the assessment must be done by a contractor or competent wireman registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga. Our single-phase wall charger guide covers it.

Why is a home DC charger usually impractical?

DC chargers are mainly installed at commercial or public-charging locations. Unlike an AC wall charger, a DC unit contains the equipment that converts AC into DC before the power reaches the car. Depending on its output, this can require more electrical capacity, larger and more complex equipment, cooling, specialist installation and ongoing maintenance.

The point is not that it is forbidden. For most landed-house buyers, those requirements make AC wall charging the more practical home solution. Anyone considering one should start with a registered contractor assessment.

What actually decides your charging speed?

The figure advertised on a charging station is its maximum output, not a promise about your car.

Charging power is measured in kW, while battery capacity is measured in kWh. A larger battery capacity does not automatically mean the car can accept a higher charging rate.

Actual charging power settles at the lowest applicable limit:

  • The vehicle’s own AC or DC acceptance limit
  • What the charger can deliver
  • How full the battery already is
  • Battery temperature
  • The charging curve
  • Power sharing, where a station splits output between two vehicles

During a DC session, charging power may rise, hold for part of the session and then reduce. It commonly falls as the battery reaches a higher state of charge because the vehicle and battery management system limit what the pack accepts.

Current Malaysian BYD models are listed with maximum AC charging rates of 7 kW or 11 kW, while their published DC maximums range from about 82 kW to 230 kW. Each model page lists the figures.

Does DC fast charging affect the battery?

What the vehicle provides. DC fast charging is a supported function designed into the car, and the battery management and thermal systems control conditions during a session. Using a compatible DC fast charger as intended does not by itself mean the battery has been damaged. Battery condition and any warranty assessment still depend on the vehicle, its usage, maintenance history and the applicable BYD Malaysia terms. Our battery guide covers those.

What general research indicates. Studies of lithium iron phosphate cells indicate that repeated high charging power, heat and long spells at a high state of charge can contribute to ageing. The cited study tested single cells in a laboratory, not a BYD pack in Malaysian conditions, and gives no figure that applies to your car.

What this means in practice. DC charging on a trip is normal and useful; our interstate travel guide covers planning stops. Battery care is not about avoiding every DC session. Repeated heat exposure and leaving the car parked for long periods at a very high state of charge are more useful habits to consider.

What is BYD FLASH Charging?

FLASH Charging is BYD’s announced very high-power charging technology. It combines a high-voltage architecture, very high current, a battery designed to accept that power, advanced thermal management and cooling, and battery management control.

BYD says its 2nd Generation Blade Battery can charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes under the announced FLASH Charging system. This is BYD’s claimed result, and the announcement does not fully describe all test conditions.

Very high charging speed requires the vehicle, battery and charging station to work as one compatible system. A charger with a higher maximum output cannot make a vehicle accept more power than its own charging limit. Buyers should therefore compare the officially published AC and DC charging specifications for the specific model they are considering.

Which type fits your routine?

AC covers regular driving, wherever the car sits for hours. DC suits distance driving and topping up on the move.

Worth answering before choosing a model:

  • Where does the car park overnight, and can that place take a wall charger?
  • How far do you drive in a normal week, and how often outstation?
  • What AC and DC rates does the model support?

The model pages list each variant’s figures, and the price list shows where each sits.
