NEDC vs WLTP: What BYD Range Figures Mean in Malaysia

The range figure printed on a BYD spec sheet in Malaysia is normally an NEDC figure. NEDC and WLTP are two different laboratory test procedures, and WLTP uses a more demanding profile, so the same car usually records a lower number under it. Neither figure is a promise of the distance you will cover on a Malaysian road.

That is not a reason to distrust the numbers. Rated figures let buyers compare cars under identical conditions, which no road test can offer. They can provide a starting reference for trip planning, but should not be treated as a guaranteed driving distance. This guide explains what each standard measures and how to work out a planning figure from your own driving.

What NEDC and WLTP mean

Both are controlled laboratory test procedures used to rate vehicles, not measurements taken on a public road.

NEDC, the New European Driving Cycle, is the older of the two. WLTP, the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure, was developed through an international vehicle regulation process to reflect newer driving conditions, and it replaced NEDC for new vehicle testing in Europe.

Testing indoors is deliberate. The UK Vehicle Certification Agency describes WLTP testing as conducted in a laboratory so that meaningful comparisons between cars can be made. The trade-off is that the conditions producing the figure are not the conditions you drive in.

Why the two figures are different

WLTP runs a longer and more demanding profile than NEDC, so the same car with the same battery records a lower range under it. Picture two examiners marking one essay against different mark schemes: the mark changes, the essay does not.

There is no single official conversion that turns any NEDC figure into a WLTP figure. The gap depends on the individual vehicle and its own test result, so percentages circulating online are estimates by whoever published them, not official ratings for a Malaysian BYD. Where a manufacturer has published both figures, use the published pair rather than a calculated one.

Which figure Malaysian BYD buyers normally see

Current BYD Malaysia model pages commonly display advertised range using NEDC. The current BYD Malaysia Sealion 7 page presents its advertised range in NEDC.

This matters when you shop across brands. Comparing a BYD advertised in NEDC against a rival advertised in WLTP means comparing two different test procedures, and the NEDC number will tend to look more generous. Check which standard each figure came from before deciding that one car travels further than another.

A BYD Seal example

One earlier official BYD Malaysia e-brochure for the Seal printed both standards side by side, in the same table, for the same car:

Seal variant covered by that brochureNEDCWLTP
Premium650 km570 km
Performance580 km520 km

These figures were officially published for the Seal configuration covered by that earlier BYD Malaysia brochure. They are not presented here as newly confirmed 2026 WLTP ratings, and should not be read as applying to every current Seal variant, since specifications change between model updates. For any car you are considering, confirm the figures in current official material for that exact variant.

What the table shows usefully is the shape of the difference: same car, same battery, two official numbers, separated by a meaningful margin. Resist turning that difference into a rule of thumb for other models.

The same brochure carries BYD’s own caution, stating that the declared range is estimated for reference only and is influenced by factors including driving style, load and traffic.

Which figure is more useful for planning

Where a WLTP figure is published, it is the more useful comparison reference, because its profile is closer to the way cars are actually driven. But closer is not the same as achievable. The Vehicle Certification Agency notes that while WLTP data is a closer representation of real world figures, variations in driving style, accessories and additional weight will affect what you actually achieve. Actual results may still be higher or lower depending on the route, traffic, speed, weather, air conditioning use and vehicle load.

The honest use of either standard is comparison, not prediction. Rated figures rank cars against each other; they cannot tell you whether you will reach a destination without stopping. For that, our guide to interstate travel and public charging covers route and charging planning.

How to estimate range from your own driving

The most useful number comes from how you drive.

Watch the distance covered against the battery percentage used, then scale it up. If 50% of the battery covers 180 km during a representative period of your normal driving, the same pattern suggests roughly 360 km from a full charge.

Treat that as an estimate and nothing firmer:

  • One short trip is not enough. Watch a normal week or two covering your usual mix of driving.
  • Speed, traffic, weather, air conditioning, passengers, luggage, gradients and driving style all change the result.
  • There is no need to run the battery down to 0% to test this, and it is not a sensible habit.
  • Keep a comfortable buffer in any plan built on the figure.

Avoid dividing battery capacity by a displayed consumption reading and treating the answer as accurate. Published battery capacity may not always be identical to the usable energy available to the driver.

Battery condition also shifts over years of ownership, which our guide to BYD battery lifespan, warranty and replacement cost covers separately.

What to check before choosing a BYD model

Once the rated figure stops being a distance promise, the deciding factors are your own:

  • Your typical weekly distance
  • Your longest regular trip, and how often you actually make it
  • Where you can charge, at home and at the places you drive to
  • How often you carry a full car or heavy luggage

With those answers, rated ranges do the job they are built for: separating a model with comfortable margin for your routine from one that would leave you planning around every trip. Current variants are on the model pages, and the price list shows where each one sits.
